Frequently Asked Questions
Where will I be going for my eco tour?
We operate on trails within the New River Gorge National Park, most often in the northern section near Fayetteville. We'll ask you to tell us your specific interests and pick the best trail on which to lead you, taking into consideration local conditions like recent weather and stream flows. Being very familiar with all of the trails, how they change with the seasons and when they are most used helps us choose the very best trail for you. We'll let you know a few days before your tour exactly which trail we've picked.
How will I know where the tour begins?
Tours begin at an established national park trailhead. These are well-marked and provide plenty of parking. You’ll get an email and text no later than the day before your scheduled eco tour that includes driving directions to the trailhead and all the info you’ll need for a enjoyable experience.
What should I expect?
You will meet your guides, Amy and Shawn, at the parking area of the selected trailhead. They will go over safety guidelines and give you an overview of what to expect. Once on the trail, Amy & Shawn will provide a narration about the natural and human history of the New River Gorge, and point out the many interesting plants, fungi and animals that make their home in the gorge. You can expect to walk about 1 mile per hour and are welcome to take as many rest breaks as you need. Amy and Shawn will provide extra drinking water and some trail snacks. Your tour should last approximately 3 hours.
What should I wear? What should I bring?
The most important thing is footwear. Please wear hiking boots or sturdy and comfortable shoes. Dress in layers because sometimes the temperature can vary greatly from beginning to end of the tour, and rain gear is advisable if the forecast calls for it. Insect repellent is a good idea, but sunscreen is usually not necessary since we spend most of our time under the forest canopy. You should bring drinking water, but Amy & Shawn will have extra as a safety precaution.
May I bring my dog?
No, sorry. We can't allow dogs on our tours no matter how well-behaved they may be.
What is your cancellation policy?
Cancellations made more than 14 days prior to the date of the reservation will be refunded 100% of the total booking charges (less $5.00 cancellation fee). Cancellations made between 7 and 13 days prior to the date of the reservation will be refunded 50% of the total booking charges (less $5.00 cancellation fee). For cancellations made within 7 days prior to the date, no refund will be issued. Full refunds will be issued if tours must be cancelled due to inclement weather.
Do you practice sustainable tourism?
We are committed to sustainable tourism and observe the following principles: 1. Environmental Sustainability – By focusing on very small groups and less traveled trails (you won’t find us on Endless Wall or Long Point), we will help reduce the impact tourism has on the natural landscape. Additionally, we will educate the public on current issues facing our environment. 2.Social Sustainability – We will provide well-informed and high-quality advice to guests which will help reduce traffic congestion and parking shortages in overexposed places. Our goal is to foster better cooperation between tourists and local residents so we all can enjoy the physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits that come from experiencing nature. 3.Economic Sustainability – As native West Virginian entrepreneurs ourselves, we support other local businesses through the items and services we purchase and promote. By providing guided activities, we are encouraging visitors to stay longer in the area, which helps further stimulate our economy.
