A Wet Spring Means a Colorful Summer

The past two summers have been incredibly dry in the New River Gorge. So dry, that last year the National Weather Service considered it as a moderate to severe drought from mid-summer into the winter months. The drought was officially broken earlier this year when spring rains came -- and never left! We've had one of the wettest springs in recent memory and that is good news for the forests in the New River Gorge!
We've already seen more growth in our native plants this year than we did all of last year. Mushrooms are showing up early, almost like they have been waiting for two years for enough moisture to fruit. We're especially excited for Chanterelle season to arrive because we found almost none of these yellow jewels of the forest for the past two years!
If you've been wanting to join us for a New River Gorge Eco Tour, this summer would be a great time to do so because we predict it is going to be a very lively and colorful season.
